That you probably didn't even want to know anyway

So I've seen a small rash of "X things about me" posts lately and I feel inspired to post a similar entry... about you.

1) You like a lot of bad movies.
2) You don't read enough.
3) You don't read enough of the stuff that I read.
4) You're probably not working in the field that you got your degree in, if you even got a degree.
5) Your family was probably more dysfunctional than mine.
6) You know more cool and interesting people in real life than I do.
7) You're not as smart as I am.
8) Your sports interests are too mainstream.
9) You like weird, disgusting food.
10) If you disagree with me about something, it's because you're wrong.
11) You do have a lot of interesting stories.

1) You like a lot of bad movies.
Heh. True.

2) You don't read enough.
It sometimes feels that way.

3) You don't read enough of the stuff that I read.
I don't know what you read.

4) You're probably not working in the field that you got your degree in, if you even got a degree.
Wrong. I'm working in the field for which I earned two degrees.

5) Your family was probably more dysfunctional than mine.
Doubtful. Mine was pretty ok for most of my life.

6) You know more cool and interesting people in real life than I do.
Yea, probably.

7) You're not as smart as I am.
Wrong again.

8) Your sports interests are too mainstream.
Maybe.

9) You like weird, disgusting food.
I'm pretty basic in my cuisine.

10) If you disagree with me about something, it's because you're wrong.
I don't see how that is, since I'm never wrong.

11) You do have a lot of interesting stories.
Yes, but I refuse to share them.

Wrong. I'm working in the field for which I earned two degrees.

Well, I did say "probably".
5) Your family was probably more dysfunctional than mine.
Doubtful. Mine was pretty ok for most of my life.

So was mine.
7) You're not as smart as I am.
Wrong again.

Well, I'm willing to admit that people exist that are smarter than me, and I've even met a few of them. But I'm also willing to put money on being able to outscore most people on any standard American intelligence measure. Mensa, for instance, accepts GRE scores. And I know for a fact that you did not outscore me on that.
10) If you disagree with me about something, it's because you're wrong.
I don't see how that is, since I'm never wrong.

Then you must agree with me on everything. Including this.

But I'm also willing to put money on being able to outscore most people on any standard American intelligence measure.

I don't really consider standardized tests as an accurate measure of a person's intelligence. In fact, I don't know of anything I would consider an accurate, unbiased measure. At least not with the fidelity needed to determine who is the smarter person among closely scoring individuals.

Mensa, for instance, accepts GRE scores. And I know for a fact that you did not outscore me on that.

I certainly wouldn't consider a single test instance as such a measure. And while you may have scored higher than me, you did not score significantly higher than me (certainly less than 5%).

Actually, I'm with you on that one.
On the other hand, since there are no tests that are truly worthwhile, and there is SOME validity to the flawed ones (with the usual arguments about cultural bias, visual/linguistic focus, etc.), might as well go with what's available.

you did not score significantly higher than me (certainly less than 5%).

4.35%, to be reasonably precise. (Since you posted your GRE scores in one of your articles.)

(7: you're not as smart as I am) 7/true. oh, so true

Now on the other hand, I don't like to see intelligent people selling themselves short....

I would have to guess that you are pretty much 'on' here...

1) You like a lot of bad movies.

What's bad about 50 First Dates and School of Rock and 28 Days later?

2) You don't read enough.

I read stuff all day . . . just not smart, brainiac stuff.

3) You don't read enough of the stuff that I read.

OK.

4) You're probably not working in the field that you got your degree in, if you even got a degree.

No, I'm not working in the field that I got my degree in, but I AM overqualified (as far as education goes) for my job.

5) Your family was probably more dysfunctional than mine.

Possibly.

6) You know more cool and interesting people in real life than I do.

Very seriously doubt that one.

7) You're not as smart as I am.

Nope . . . but being smarter than me isn't much to brag about.

8) Your sports interests are too mainstream.

I have no interest in sports so

9) You like weird, disgusting food.

I like pizza and pasta and sushi and Thai food . . . I don't think those things count as weird or disgusting (I don't eat unagi!).

10) If you disagree with me about something, it's because you're wrong.

Maybe . . . but I would never admit that.

11) You do have a lot of interesting stories.

Meh. Not so much.

2)

I read stuff all day . . . just not smart, brainiac stuff.

Ah, but how fast do you read??
